Nightingale by John Houck

May 2nd-9th, 2009
Opening Reception Saturday, May 2nd 7-10 pm

Nightingale is a new installation by John Houck, created specifically for workspace2601 and the neighborhood of Lincoln Heights. In this installation, Houck references the altered public sculptures and security measures of Los Angeles. The installation includes a styrofoam sculpture that generates surface throughout the gallery. Viewers enter the installation somewhere between surface and volume. The forced perspectives invert the gaze of the viewer to that of the central figure in the installation, a styrofoam lion. Houck plays figuration against the traditionally abstract space of phenomenological installations.
