The American game show is a brilliant synthesis of commercial titillation, spectacle, chance and consumer celebration presented to entertain millions of viewers. The grandaddy of all game shows, “The Price is Right”, typifies this glorification of new products and trains both contestants and viewers in the art of ‘penny wisdom’, the rites of over-consumption and the ecstasy of winning something for nothing.
In the exhibition “The Winning Hand”, Danielle McCullough, Mike Olin and Joy Curtis-Olin use the aesthetics, forms, and methods of sublimation used by popular game shows to create a game show set of their own, revealing the rift between these popularized values and life as we know it. “The Winning Hand” invites viewers to participate with game show-like props and games in which the the games are faulty, there is no host/guide, the prizes are trash and chances are you probably won’t win without cheating.
“The Winning Hand” Opens August 14th from 6-9 pm, Closes on August 20th 6-9 pm.
